Friday Five: Did You Know?

Happy Friday from a far off land! I’m on an international business trip at the moment, but happy to connect with everyone from hotels and airports and taxis around the world as I journey to five different countries on this trip. Join our Friday Five linkup, co-hosted by me, Eat Pray Run, DC and Mar on the Run – all the details are at the bottom of the post. Be sure to visit several other blogs in the linkup and find some new reads.

Today’s Friday Five theme is “5 Things About Me”, and I had to think hard about what I might not have shared so yet on this little internet space. I have an About Me page, I’ve shared Random ABC Facts About Me, I posted a Friday Five About Me a year ago, and last summer I shared Five Things About Me. Well… you get the point.

But I love this theme because it’s so fun to read random facts about all of you – and you don’t know everything about me yet! Plus, I have some new readers and we have new bloggers joining in our Friday Five linkup. So here are 5 things about me!

Friday Five About Me

1. I’m terrible with song lyrics. Yes, I’m a musician. Yes, I’ve played instruments my whole life, sang in choirs, taken vocal lessons, and taught young children music. But no, I cannot remember song lyrics if my life depended on it. I’m always singing the wrong words. But I love to sing and I have a decent voice but I tend to remember the melody and not the lyrics. And hey, if you’re going to make a mistake, go big and sing it proudly!

2. I’m growing my hair long but can’t stand it. I usually grow my hair to my shoulders, cut it to my chin, then grow it to my shoulders. I’ve been so patient, growing my hair long throughout the past year, and I’m loving the way it looks. But I still can’t get used to the way it feels on my neck. I put it up in a ponytail as soon as I get home from work – well, usually in the car driving home.

I got it cut and colored (gotta get the gray out!) on Saturday so it would look nice for my big trip and I had the stylist take some of the weight off it by thinning it out. It´s okay, but just wait – by summer I’ll chop it to my shoulders again. She straightened it – it will never look like this again.

3. My have broken stuff and haven’t replaced them. Don’t let this tidbit shock you, but my house does not look like a museum. I work full time, have three kids, write on this blog and for RunHaven on the side, and get up early in the morning to train for running and triathlon races. And the broken furniture thing – our couch is broken and our kitchen table and chairs are broken. Why don’t I replace them? Because I have two small boys who ruin everything.

If you’ve ever had a baby whose diaper leaks on the couch, a kid who pukes without making it to the bathroom, a toddler who stabs the table with his fork at dinnertime, and kids who spill every chance they aren’t monitored, you’ll understand why we can’t have nice things. I think by summer we might be out of this phase, and we’ll finally get a new table and couch. I just haven’t wanted to spend the money on something that will just get ruined. I’m excited to be coming out of the baby and toddler phase.

4. I like to ski and snowboard but haven’t been in years. I was hoping to get to the ski slopes this winter because it has been years since I have been! I learned to snowboard at Lake Tahoe one year visiting a good friend, and then went a couple times after that. But it’s been too many years!

5. I speak French and used to speak Italian. I love learning languages but I have lost the conversational Italian that I used to have from living there in my early 20s. And I can get by pretty well in French but rarely get a chance to speak it. I’m currently on this business trip and nobody can understand me in the limited Spanish that I know. It’s truly sad, because my accent must be so horrible – they don’t even understand me when I say the correct words. Oh well – off to the next country tonight!

Are you good at remembering song lyrics? Do you speak any other languages?
